Seal, I'd acquaint Santa Claus with this link:
http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=123787It tells how to inspect a rifle barrel, and show how to judge its condition. Are rifle owners judgemental? Absolutely! Make an assessment of the barrel condition of any rifle you buy so you have an idea of what level of accuracy is to be expected.
It's no fun to have a rifle that is neglected, worn, and long shot out past its useful service life.
The outer appearance of a rifle has NO bearing whatsoever on the health of the barrel. Nice looking rifle may have a poor barrel. Well-used looking rifle might have a very nice barrel.
You never assume, and you always do a visual inspection prior to purchase.
You should really accompany Santa Claus and co-inspect.
You will need a cleaning rod, patches, solvent, and a bore light.
Remember that you can remove a Moisin bolt by opening the bolt, pulling the trigger, and withrawing the bolt straight back out of the rifle. Not only should you inspect the rifle from the breech end, (and also inspect from the muzzle) but you should also clean it from the breech end to spare the crown from being damaged.
Do not settle for an OK rifle. Do not buy the first one you look at.
Bide your time, and buy a rifle with a very good quality barrel, with absolutely crisp rifling and no pitting whatsoever.
You will know such a rifle when you see it. You will need to run two or three patches thru the rifle prior to visual inspection.
Insist on taking these steps with teh seller to safeguard your purchase and assure quality.
